The 91st Academy Awards kicked off on 24th March this year with a new set of 24 categories and their winners being revealed. Here, we to cover the biggest moments of the night to make sure haven’t missed out on any of the juicy bits!
As Melodious As It Gets
The 91st Oscar Academy Awards included many of the biggest members from the music industry who made the night one that we all will remember for ages to come. The night started off with a brilliant performance by The Queen with Adam Lambert taking Freddie’s place to be the lead singer.
Big names like Sam Elliot and Lady Gaga graced the red carpet with the latter winning an Oscar later that night for her marvelous original song ‘Shallow’ that was also performed live with Bradley Cooper
Cold Feet Before The Oscars!
The Academy Awards went down as smoothly as ever this year without a host but all this looked to be a huge recipe for disaster just a few weeks ago with Kevin Hart backing out of hosting the Oscars and the committee later launching a statement saying that this year’s Oscars will go on without a host.
Things got even worse when the board decided to give some of the inferior awards of the night during commercial breaks instead of giving them the spotlight they deserve. Thankfully, that plan did not go through and all the awards were telecast live.
What No One is Talking About!
This was a year full of great surprises, some good and some not so much.
Mahershala Ali received an award for his tremendous work in the Green Book, thereby making him only the 4th African origin actor to win two academy awards in almost a decade
Best Animated Feature Film – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Literally everyone knew that if any animated movie were to take it away today, it had to be Spider–Man. This was hands down the most anticipated as well as deserved award of the night. With it’s brilliant animated style and unparalleled editing, there is no way that you have not watched this movie yet.
Best Production Design + Best Scoring – Black Panther
All hail the kingdom of Wakanda! This movie’s nomination itself had caused so many ripples among the fans and this was one of the best moments of the night. Most people don’t remember how good this movie was since it’s been a while but the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally got the credit it deserved.
The Big Winners –
Last but most certainly not the least let’s talk about the biggest winners of the night.
Best Foreign Language Film – Roma
Afonso Cuaron has outdone himself by being the cinematographer, the film editor as well the script writer for this masterpiece. This man made this entire movie happen and due to its sheer brilliance, many were disappointed that Roma didn’t win the Best Film.
Best Actress in a Leading Role – Olivia Colman (The Favourite)
Talk about Oscar day surprises! While most people were rooting for Lady Gaga as Best Actress, Olivia Colman swiftly flew under the radar and got the academy award that she definitely deserves for her fantastic acting in The Favorite. If you haven’t watched that movie yet, we highly recommend that you do so tonight itself.
Best Actor in a Leading Role – Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)
Let us all be very real for a second. We all saw this one coming. Everybody wanted this guy to get his Oscar and everyone knew this was on the cards but we can now FINALLY be relieved that it’s happened and we can all be happy for this young bomb of an actor who absolutely nailed it with his performance! If that Live Aid concert did not get you chills, nothing will.
Best Picture – Green Book
The biggest award of the night also turned out to be the biggest surprise of the night as the Oscars continue to surprise us with their best picture. Two years ago, the most awaited La La Land had briefly won the award for a few seconds before Moonlight got the spotlight.
Last year the award went to The Shape Of Water. A movie that most of us didn’t even know existed and now this year the Best Picture has once again gone to a controversial movie that most people haven’t seen. Guess which movie we will be watching tonight.
