Australia won by 146 runs dismantling the Indian side by dismissing them for 140 runs in the fourth innings of the second test at Perth and levelled up the series with 1-1 to keep the series results pending and exciting in the last two tests of the series. Shastri’s XI will face Langer’s XI in the boxing day-test at Melbourne Cricket Ground(MCG), Melbourne on December 26.
What is Boxing Day Test?
Boxing Day is a Holiday celebrated the next day after Christmas Day i.e on December 26. The test match played on Boxing Day is called as Boxing Day Test. In Australia, the Boxing Test is played at Melbourne. The 3rd Test will be the 42nd Boxing Test Australia will be playing of all time. Australia has won 24 Boxing Tests and lost 8 while 10 Boxing test matches have been Drawn.
The last year’s Ashes test match played at Melbourne Cricket Ground was the only test among the 5 tests which did not witness any results and ended as a bore-draw, as the match only saw 24 wickets falling in 5 days. Last year the MCG pitch, which had been rated poor by ICC Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle after the Ashes Draw, since that time the pitch is under inspection. MCG’s wicket is a flat playing surface which can be called as batsman friendly. Even the last two Sheffield Shield tests were drawn at MCG. Matt Page the head curator of MCG expects the MCG pitch to produce a result rather than draw, talking to FOX Sports he said:-
“We’ve got some things right with our Shield pitches and other things that we wanted to improve on. Look we’re all happy with where we are at and we’re confident we will produce a good surface for Boxing Day.”
As far from the last two tests Pujara(222) and Kohli(177) are leading over-all runs among both the teams and will be the key for India at MCG’s flat pitch, from Australia the local boys Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris will be X-factor for Aussies, Harris who posted an unbeaten 250* against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield at MCG that made his selection in the Squad for this series and he played a major role with bat in the second test at Perth.
Aaron Finch whose right-hand index finger was jammed from a Mohammed Shami delivery and has declared himself fit for the 3rd Test at his home soil.
India’s opener Prithvi Shaw has been ruled out of the series due to an ankle injury he suffered while attempting for a catch during a practice match against Cricket Australia XI, Karnataka batsman Mayank Agarwal has been named Shaw’s replacement for the remaining series and also all-rounder Hardik Pandya gets his name included in the squad. Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja come in for KL Rahul, Murali Vijay and Umesh Yadav.
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh comes in for Peter Handscomb.
Australia has named the 7-year-old Archie Schiller in the 3rd test, the young boy who suffers from a rare heart condition, he wished to captain Australia one day and Cricket Australia fulfils his wish as a Christmas present, he was seen in a photograph with captains Tim Paine and Virat Kohli at Yarra Park , he is also going to be the co-captain alongside Tim Paine. He was seen practising along with the team in a video posted by cricket.com.au on their official account on all Social Media platforms captioning “Watch out Nathan Lyon, Archie’s coming for your spot”
India has drawn two tests at MCG, the last test played between the two back in 2014 was MS Dhoni’s last test where both key players Smith and Kohli had scored big hundreds. As the series is on the edge of 1-1. The match prediction will be complicated as both the teams would like to take a lead at MCG and put the other under pressure. Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly still believes that India can still win the four-match series, according to the Bengali legend “all in the playing eleven have to take up responsibility.” then only the mission will be possible.
Looking at Australia’s comeback from Adelaide loss they will continue the same and make difficult for India’s road to series win. Our match prediction is it is more likely for a draw match.
